Safflower is the top choice seed for attracting cardinals. It is also great for discouraging squirrels and grackles (black birds) and even sparrows which do not like safflower seeds. The small white thin-shelled seed is eaten by cardinals, nuthatches and chickadees. Safflower seed does not require any special feeders and can be used in any feeder in which sunflower seeds can be served.

Why I Love Safflower
"Safflower is one of those bitter seeds that you wouldn't think birds would go for but my Cardinals, House Finches, and Chickadees visit my feeder daily. The mourning doves are there to pick up the seed that drops. It is the one feeder that isn't bothered by Grackles and starlings, or squirrels."
