Description
Made Locally in Canada
Wooden Winter Roost Birdhouse is a handmade white pine roost box that gives small backyard birds a warm, sheltered place to gather through the coldest months. The house measures 17 inches high by 7 1⁄4 inches wide by 9 inches deep, with a bottom-positioned entrance hole and tightly sealed seams built to hold in heat.
Benefits
- Warm refuge in winter: The roost's primary purpose is to give birds a warm, insulated shelter during colder months. The white pine construction provides insulation that helps birds conserve energy and maintain body heat.
- Protection from the elements: The sloped, overhanging roof shields the interior from rain, snow, and harsh winds, keeping the inside dry through winter weather.
- Enhanced survival for small birds: Small birds face real challenges finding suitable winter shelter. The enclosed structure offers protection from predators and adverse weather, and species like chickadees, nuthatches, titmice, and wrens often cluster inside to share body heat, improving their odds of surviving harsh conditions.
- A window into local bird behavior: Placing a winter roost in a yard makes it possible to observe which species use enclosed winter shelters and how they behave in cold weather, something not easily seen with open feeders or summer nest boxes.
The Bottom Entrance and Sealed Seams Reduce Heat Loss
The entrance hole is placed at the bottom of the house rather than higher up, and all seams are joined tightly and sealed, specifically to prevent heat loss once birds are inside.
The Roof Is Stained Dark to Add Passive Warmth
Beyond shielding the interior from weather, the sloped roof is also stained dark to attract the sun's heat, adding a passive source of warmth on top of the insulation the white pine construction already provides.
The Front Wall Opens for Cleaning
The front wall opens upward by removing a single screw at the bottom center, giving access for cleaning and maintenance without disassembling the rest of the house.
