Out of the Lyme Light and into the Sunlight - Review

Out of the Lyme Light and into the Sunlight by Robert C. Bell- Reviewed by Alice

After having the pleasure of meeting Birder Bob at a walk organized by The Hamilton Naturalists Club, I promptly purchased and read his book; Out of the Lyme Light and into the Sunlight.

Robert is a retired exploration geologist. His career was cut short when he contracted Lyme disease, likely on one of his many work trips.

The concept of his book is to use birding as therapy. Birding won’t rid you of a chronic illness, but the pure joy of nature can help make it more bearable and life more pleasurable.

A good portion of this book describes his battle with Lyme disease and how Canadian healthcare was of little help to him, both in diagnosis and in treatment. Anyone suffering with Lyme or suspecting that they may have Lyme may find this book to be a useful read.

From there Robert goes on to describe how he fell in love with birding and the ways that his hobby helps him deal with his ongoing issues from Lyme. He describes how birding could possibly be a great therapy for any chronic illness sufferer. Whether it be watching birds out your back window or following nest cams online. Birding is adaptable to any capability.

He explains how to get started on your own birding journey. You will find recommendations of the types of feeders to use for different birds. As well as feeders to avoid if you don’t want “pig birds” coming around and getting all of the food. “Pig birds” are loved as well, but are notorious for clearing all of the seeds out fast!!

Robert takes time to discuss birding outside of your yard as well. He offers suggestions as to what camera may be good for a beginner, as well as discusses common birding lingo. There are a lot of photos included as well, they give the reader an idea of the lovelies you may see when you set out birding.

There are loads of resource suggestions included in the book as well.

All in all this was an inspiring book and a great guide to beginner birding. I strongly believe the sentiment that nature heals. This book is quite specific to birding, but Robert includes words about nature as a whole and how peaceful it can be.

The great takeaway in my opinion is; no matter what you are going through, it can be very beneficial to find something beautiful and interesting for you to focus on. Robert treats birding as a mindfulness practice, if you calm the mind, you can also calm the body. I feel the same way, there is a peace that comes with wandering in a wooded area, even just sitting in your yard and listening to all the lovely natural sounds around you.

Nature heals.
