Be Ready for the Snow! Help Local Birds Weather the Storm

|

Dear Urban Nature Store Community,

A major snowstorm is on its way, and as we prepare to stay safe and warm indoors, it’s important to remember our feathered friends who depend on us during harsh winter weather. Heavy snow and ice can make it difficult for wild birds to find food, water, and shelter — but with a few simple steps, you can make a real difference!

Here’s how you can help local birds through the storm:

🕊️ Keep feeders full and energy-rich
Fill feeders with high-fat, high-energy foods like sunflower hearts, suet, peanuts, and nyjer seed. These provide the calories birds need to stay warm and active.

❄️ Check feeder access
Make sure your feeders are not blocked or buried by snow. Brush off snow and ice regularly so birds can reach the food.

🐦 If using squirrel-proof feeders
Ensure that squirrel-proof feeders are functioning properly and not frozen or sealed shut by snow or ice.

💧 Provide fresh water
Place out unfrozen water if possible — a heated birdbath or shallow dish can be a lifesaver in freezing weather.

🏠 Add roosting pockets or shelters
Hang roosting pockets, birdhouses, or brush piles to give birds a safe, warm place to rest overnight.

Even small actions can make a big impact during extreme weather. Thank you for helping your local birds thrive this winter — they’ll reward you with their cheerful company all season long.

Stay safe,
Your local Urban Nature Store Team
