Jane’s Deck of Birds: Black-capped Chickadee

Category_Jane's Deck of Birds |

I just had to write about these curious little birds this week as I feel they were my personal assistants while putting out some seasonal evergreens on the deck.

Chickadees are friendly birds who will visit many types of feeders including hoppers, peanut feeders, suet and platform feeders. They enjoy a variety of seeds, particularly black oil sunflower, sunflower hearts, peanuts, and suet.

Chickadees will also use a nesting box. I was fortunate enough to have a pair use my birdhouse this past spring. They line the house with moss, different grasses, and rabbit fur. When I cleaned it out this fall I was amazed by how soft it was. They will also use roosting pockets in the winter taking shelter from high winds and snow. Always make sure the opening is facing away from prevailing winds.

Chickadees are permanent residents to be enjoyed all year. Their range expands from Alaska, throughout all of Canada and down to northern portions of the United States. They reside in woodlands, gardens, parks, and cities. You will recognize their call, ‘chick-a-dee-dee-dee’ as it sounds like their name. Their mating call is a drawn-out feee-beee which drops in pitch on the second note. This call can sometimes be mistaken for the Phoebe’s song.

An interesting fact - Chickadees are the Provincial Bird of New Brunswick!
