Dear Urban Nature Store Community,
Southern Ontario is digging out from a massive snowfall, and while the landscape looks beautiful, these conditions can be incredibly challenging for our wild birds. Right now, a little extra help from us can make a big difference.
As you clear paths and dig out around your home, please take a moment to check in on the birds that rely on your yard. Here are a few simple but important ways you can help:
• Keep feeders full with energy-rich seed- Foods like sunflower hearts and fatty suets are especially valuable in cold weather, providing the high energy birds need to stay warm.
• Dig out and clear feeders regularly- Heavy snow can bury feeders or block access ports and perches. Even a well-stocked feeder won’t help if birds can’t reach it.
• Check squirrel-proof feeders carefully- Wet, heavy snow can cause weight-trigger mechanisms to close unintentionally, preventing birds from feeding. Make sure all ports are open and moving freely.
• Provide fresh water if possible- Snow and ice often cover natural water sources, so a shallow dish of unfrozen water (changed daily) can be a real lifeline.
Birds burn a tremendous amount of energy just staying warm during storms like this, and reliable access to food and water can mean the difference between survival and struggle.
Thank you for thinking of wildlife as we all dig out from this storm. If you need winter bird food, feeders, or advice, we’re always happy to help.
Stay warm and happy birding,
Your Local Urban Nature Store Team
