Most Canadians look forward to summer heat but such conditions can be hard on birds. Birds do not sweat, relying on panting to lower their body temperature. They also change their feeding habits during the day, taking advantage of cooler morning conditions and often shutting down at the hottest time. However, hungry young, especially songbirds, require a regular flow of insects so adults can’t completely pause the search for food.
You can help by offering a bird bath. Both Robins and Grackles will be regular visitors but many others will show up. Most songbirds need to drink little water to survive, relying on moisture in insects but they love a good bath, even in a puddle. Change the water daily, especially when it is hot and consider operating a sprinkler for a short time.
