Protect Migrating Birds from Window Collisions

birdwatching |

As you may be aware, this time of the year marks the peak of the Fall bird migration season. Thousands of birds are currently in transit, flying long distances to reach their winter habitats. You may have already witnessed some Dark-eyed Juncos, White-throated sparrows, Kinglets, Sapsuckers and Northern Flickers in your area.

However, during this migration period, birds face a significant threat—window collisions. Birds, especially those in unfamiliar areas, are prone to colliding with windows, causing injury and often fatalities. It is estimated that collisions account for 1 billion bird deaths each year, or 10% of the total bird population in North America. In Canada alone, glass claims the lives of around 25 million birds every year*. This is a distressing and preventable occurrence.

To mitigate this risk and help protect our winged companions, Urban Nature Store strongly encourages you to take the following measures:

1. Treat Windows with Feather-Friendly Window Markers: Apply feather-friendly window markers on your windows to make them visible to birds. These markers will help prevent collisions by breaking up the reflection and making the window more noticeable to the birds.

2. Turn Off Porch Lights: During the migration season, turning off unnecessary porch lights at night can reduce the risk of birds becoming disoriented and colliding with buildings.

Your proactive involvement in these simple yet impactful actions can make a significant difference in safeguarding our bird populations during this critical migration period.

If you have any questions or need assistance on how to apply Feather-Friendly window markers, feel free to reach out to our team at Urban Nature Store.

Let's work together to create a safer environment for our feathered friends.

Sincerely,

Brenda
