Many people don’t realize that some birds will have more than one brood in a season. That sure explains why we have so many Robins. In fact, Robins regularly have a second brood and possibly three, especially if their first is earlier in the spring. Sometimes fully developed juveniles will even help out feeding the young. No doubt the parents appreciate the help. It’s easy to follow their progress if they build their nest on your front door.

The Robin’s close cousin, the Eastern Bluebird, follows the same plan. A second nesting is almost routine for them and they may also attempt a third. To the list we can add Mourning Dove, Northern Cardinal, Carolina Wren, House Finch and even the Ruby-throated Hummingbird. All of these familiar species are kept busy throughout the summer. I’ll bet they can’t wait for a break.
