I am disappointed when I see empty feeders. We are now in winter and natural food will be diminishing daily before it is replenished next spring. Chickadees have been stocking up for many weeks, taking a mix of natural and feeder food and caching it in nooks and crannies everywhere. A few weeks ago, while preparing my recycling bin for pickup, a Chickadee landed right beside me, choosing a gap in cardboard to hide a sunflower seed. Needless to say, that was not going to be available when it returns in weeks to come.

Whether resident birds like Chickadees, Cardinals, nuthatches and woodpeckers or winter visitors such as northern finches, Juncos and Tree Sparrows, all appreciate a helping hand during these challenging months. Have black-oil sunflower seed, a good mixed seed and suet available and there will be many happy beaks out there this winter.
