Many people tend to hibernate through the winter, venturing out only when they really have to. While no one should be out in storms and days of high winds are not ideal (for us or for the birds) from a birding perspective, winter offers its own advantages. The southern Great Lakes, especially Lake Ontario, is the winter destination for many species of ducks. Even in the coldest weather, when shallow shoreline areas can be iced in, there is always open water further out for diving ducks.
Depending on where you live, your neighbourhood could have Juncos and there are a few winter finches like grosbeaks and Redpolls around. Of special note are winter visitors like Snowy Owls and Rough-legged Hawks. These birds are occasionally seen in rural areas while a few Snowy Owls spend time along Lake Ontario. The key to enjoying winter is to pick the right day and prepare for the conditions so you can experience some of the seasonal marvels of life in Canada.
