Every year, this day gives me a chance to reflect on something that has quietly shaped so much of my life—my connection to nature. For me, that connection didn’t begin in a forest or on a hiking trail. It started much closer to home, the day my mom helped me hang my very first bird feeder.
I still remember the anticipation of waiting to see who would show up. At first, it was just a few curious visitors, but before long, I began to recognize patterns—different species at different times of day, their preferences, their behaviors. That small feeder became my window into a much larger world, and it sparked a curiosity that has never really left me.
Over time, that curiosity grew into a deeper appreciation for the delicate and incredibly important relationships that exist between humans and the natural world. We’re not separate from nature—we’re part of it. And the choices we make, even small ones in our own backyards, can have a meaningful impact.
That’s one of the reasons I’m so passionate about supporting our wild bird populations. Birds are more than just beautiful to watch—they’re essential. They help control insect populations, spread seeds, and act as indicators of the overall health of our environment. When birds thrive, it’s a good sign that the ecosystem around us is doing well too.
But birds aren’t the only ones we need to think about. Butterflies and bees play an equally vital role. As pollinators, they are responsible for helping so many of our plants reproduce—everything from the flowers in our gardens to a significant portion of the food we eat. Without them, our landscapes and our food systems would look very different.
That’s why Earth Day feels especially important. It’s a reminder that supporting nature doesn’t always require grand gestures. Sometimes it starts with something as simple as putting up a feeder, planting native flowers, or choosing to create a more welcoming space for wildlife in your own yard or balcony.
At Urban Nature Store, we believe that these small actions can add up to something much bigger. By making it easier for people to connect with and support the natural world right outside their doors, we hope to inspire the same sense of wonder that started for me all those years ago.
So today, I encourage you to take a moment—look around, listen for birdsong, notice the movement of pollinators, and think about what role you might play in supporting the world we all share.
Happy Earth Day,
Paul Oliver - Founder Of Urban Nature Store
