This is one of the questions I get asked all the time at Urban Nature Store:
“Paul, is there really such a thing as a truly squirrel-proof bird feeder?”

And I always smile a little before answering… because I know what’s coming next.

The short answer? Yes—there absolutely is.

The longer answer? Well, it depends a little on you, your setup, and just how determined your local squirrels are (and trust me, they are very determined).

Over the years, I’ve tried just about every type of feeder out there. Some worked for a while, some didn’t last a day, and a few were completely outsmarted before I even finished my morning coffee. But the feeders I keep coming back to, and the ones I use in my own backyard, are the Squirrel Buster feeders by Brome Bird Care out of Knowlton, Quebec.

I’ll be honest—sometimes it takes a few tries to get the placement just right. In fact, the first week is often a bit of a chess match. You move the feeder, the squirrel tests it. You adjust again, the squirrel tries a new angle. Eventually, though, you win. And when you do, it’s incredibly satisfying.

🐦 My Go-To Feeders

In my own yard, I’ve been using Brome feeders for years. I’ve got a few favourites:

Now, let’s talk about what goes in the feeder.

I’m a big fan of sunflower hearts—the no-mess, no-waste option. The birds love them, and I love the fact that I’m not constantly cleaning up shells underneath the feeder.

There’s another advantage too: less seed falling to the ground means you’re not attracting unwanted ground feeders like rodents. It keeps things cleaner and more controlled.

Using a well-designed feeder allows you to feed the birds you want to attract, reduce waste, and still coexist with the wildlife around you.  I have even been known to put out a separate squirrel feeder with their own squirrel mix, which they are happy to use…..sort of a peace treaty I have reached with my local squirrel family.

And honestly, watching a squirrel try (and fail) to outsmart a Squirrel Buster feeder is entertaining in itself.

So yes—there really is such a thing as a squirrel-proof feeder.

But the real secret is this: it’s not just about the feeder. It’s about the combination of great design and proper placement. Get those two things right, and you’ll spend less time battling squirrels—and more time enjoying the birds.
