One of the great joys in life is seeing people you care about take meaningful action to improve the communities around them. That's why I want to give a heartfelt shout-out to my dad, John Oliver, and my uncle, David Oliver, who have recently established the Oliver Family Community Fund in the Napanee area as part of the Lennox & Addington Community Foundation.
While our family has always valued community involvement, I was especially pleased to learn about the priorities they chose for this fund. The areas they identified for charitable support are causes that are very near and dear to my heart: environmental protection, healthcare, animal welfare, and poverty reduction throughout the region.
An especially meaningful aspect of this initiative is that the first two scholarships awarded through the fund were named in honour of my grandparents, Helen and Ross Oliver. It's a wonderful tribute to their legacy and the values they instilled in their family. Both believed strongly in the importance of community, helping others, and creating opportunities for future generations. Seeing their names attached to scholarships that will help young people pursue their goals is a fitting and lasting way to celebrate their lives and contributions.

Anyone who follows my writing knows how passionate I am about protecting the natural world. Healthy ecosystems, clean water, thriving wildlife populations, and accessible green spaces benefit everyone. Supporting environmental initiatives today helps ensure future generations can enjoy the same connection to nature that many of us cherish.
Healthcare is another priority that touches every family at some point in life. Strong local healthcare services contribute directly to the well-being and resilience of communities, especially in rural and small-town areas where resources can sometimes be stretched.
Animal welfare is equally important. Whether it's supporting shelters, rescue organizations, wildlife rehabilitation efforts, or programs that promote responsible care of animals, these initiatives make a real difference for creatures that depend on our stewardship and compassion.
Finally, poverty reduction addresses one of the most fundamental challenges facing many communities. Helping people access food, housing, education, and essential supports strengthens the social fabric of an entire region. When families are given opportunities to thrive, everyone benefits.
What I admire most about the Oliver Family Community Fund is that it has been designed to create lasting impact. Rather than supporting a single project or organization, the fund can help address evolving community needs over time while staying true to its core values.
Congratulations to Dad and Uncle David on this wonderful initiative. I know many individuals, families, organizations, and community groups across the Napanee region will benefit from your generosity and vision in the years ahead. I'm proud to see our family name associated with causes that reflect compassion, stewardship, and a commitment to building stronger communities while honouring the legacy of Helen and Ross Oliver.
