Assistant Store Manager - Urban Nature Store

Job Description:

We are seeking a capable and enthusiastic Retail Store Assistant Manager to join our team at Urban Nature Store. As the Assistant Manager, you will work closely with the Store Manager to ensure smooth store operations, including customer service, sales, merchandising, Point of Sale (POS) operations, payroll management, scheduling, and serving as the manager on duty when the Store Manager is not on-site. This position requires the ability to handle heavy lifting of 50lb bags and entails a strong focus on customer service, sales, and team coordination.

Responsibilities:

Collaborate with the Store Manager to ensure exceptional customer service is provided by the store team, including greeting, assisting, and educating customers about our products, particularly in the field of wild birding and nature-inspired gifts.

  • Assist the Store Manager in managing and motivating a team of 3 to 6 retail associates, providing guidance, training, and support to deliver excellent customer service and achieve sales goals.
  • Support the Store Manager in daily store operations, including opening and closing procedures, cash handling, inventory management, visual merchandising, and maintaining a clean and organized store environment.
  • Experience with Point of Sale (POS) systems to process sales transactions, returns, exchanges, and ensure accurate inventory records.
  • Aid in driving sales by working closely with the team, analyzing sales data, implementing sales strategies, and ensuring product knowledge is shared effectively with customers.
  • Utilize comprehensive knowledge of wild birding, bird species, and related products to assist customers in making informed purchasing decisions and provide expert advice on bird feed, feeders, birdhouses, binoculars, field guides, and other nature-themed gift items.
  • Assist the Store Manager in managing employee payroll, scheduling, and maintaining proper staffing levels to meet customer demands and deliver excellent service.
  • Serve as the manager on duty in the absence of the Store Manager, taking responsibility for overall store operations and decision-making.
  • Contribute to employee training, development, and performance evaluations to enhance skills and product knowledge.
  • Support the Store Manager in implementing effective local marketing strategies, promotions, and special events to drive foot traffic and increase sales.
  • Collaborate with the Store Manager in maintaining proper inventory levels, performing physical inventory counts, conducting stock checks, and requesting items to ensure adequate product availability.
  • Adhere to company policies and procedures, including safety protocols, to ensure the well-being of customers, employees, and the store.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience in retail, preferably in a nature-themed or specialty store.
  • Knowledge of wild birding, bird species, and their habitats, as well as familiarity with related products such as feed, feeders, and birdhouses.
  • Physical ability to lift and carry heavy bags weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Proven track record of delivering exceptional customer service and achieving sales targets.
  • Experience with Point of Sale (POS) systems and cash handling procedures.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and coordinate a team.
  • Proficient in payroll management and scheduling for a small team.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to engage with customers, employees, and the Store Manager.
  • Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings as per the store's schedule.
